In this 8-week winter series at The Painting School with Alexa Saxton Thomas, students will explore the quiet beauty, subtle light, and expressive color of the season through the work of both historic and contemporary painters.
Drawing inspiration from Wolf Kahn, Degas, Morisot, Wyeth, Sargent, Avery, and modern pastel and gouache artists, this class strengthens skills in drawing, watercolor, gouache, and pastel while helping each student develop a personal visual language.
Students will learn to:
Observe and interpret winter light with clarity
Simplify and organize complex scenes
Use color intentionally to create mood and atmosphere
Move confidently between mediums
Build expressive, painterly mark-making inspired by master artists
Rooted in a supportive studio community, the series blends foundational technique with creative exploration, encouraging students to grow together, share discoveries, and paint winter with sensitivity, confidence, and imagination.
Dates: Tuesday Evenings 7-9pm
January 6, 13, 20, 27, February 3, 10, 24, March 3
