During this six-week painting and drawing series at The Painting School, we will be exploring how light transforms the world as autumn gives way to winter.
The central focus of this six-week series will be understanding how warm and cool colors work together to create light, shadow, depth, and atmosphere. Building on the drawing and painting skills we have developed, we will explore how color temperature can transform an ordinary subject into a luminous, expressive painting and create and specify mood.
Through drawing, watercolor, gouache, and pastel, we will investigate how a cool shadow can make a warm light glow, and how subtle shifts in temperature create the illusion of form and distance.
Each class will pair one historical artist with one contemporary artist, studying their approaches to color and translating those observations into practical exercises and individual paintings.
