Spring to Summer Light in Painting - June 9, 16, 23 2026

In this 3-week June series at The Painting School with Alexa Saxton Thomas, students will explore the beauty, Summer light, and expressive color of the Spring/Summer seasons through the work of both historic and contemporary painters.

Drawing inspiration from Matisse, Bonnard, Sorolla, and contemporary pastel, watercolor and gouache artists, this class strengthens skills in drawing, watercolor, gouache, and pastel while helping each student develop a personal visual language.

Students will learn to:

  • Observe and interpret Spring/Summer light with clarity

  • Simplify and organize complex scenes

  • Use color intentionally to create mood and atmosphere

  • Move confidently between mediums

  • Build expressive, painterly mark-making inspired by master artists

Rooted in a supportive studio community, the series blends foundational technique with creative exploration, encouraging students to grow together, share discoveries, and paint winter with sensitivity, confidence, and imagination.
